Everyone Has 1 Golden Birthday

March 22,1992; My Golden Birthday

This year I had my golden birthday. It should have been called my porcelain birthday as I spent the whole evening taking copious tequila shots with my uncle and his friends in what by day is Modellounge under Coffee Shop in Union Square.  The whole underground lair was rented out for his party, that happens to be the day before mine, so naturally when the drunken bar members found this out, it turned into OUR birthday at midnight. Tequila, my boyfriend, and all of our best friends, turned into too much tequila, angry best friends, and a lot of puking before my morning photo shoot.

As I lay in my bed to sick to move, I thought to myself; Kate Moss had to have had 1000 hungover mornings, I have to supermodel the fuck out of this and get up now, and that’s just what I did. I knew that when I invested $85.00 on the Kate book that it would come in handy as life long inspiration for my strung out mornings, giving me my guiding light of hope in the form or perky breasts, and feline eyes. I have only Kate to thank for showing up on set that morning, as a beacon of hope for all the models that, “went to hard” the night before. All jokes aside, ( “jokes”), I had the most perfect birthday doing what I love. Creating art with an amazing team of people who are inspired and kind, here is the product of my golden birthday!

Auras Are Real

On the southeast corner of Canal and Centre there is an indoor Chinese strip mall. Inside of that strip mall is Magic Jewelry, a spiritual crystal and chakra stone retailer with an additional feature: aura portraiture. For $20 one of the ladies operating the store will place you on a small wooden stool with two biofeedback mechanisms on either side for your hands to rest on. She will then take a special Polaroid photograph that uses biofeedback from your body's energy to expose the correct aura color(s) on the film (if this sounds unclear, it's because I'm still unclear of how it actually works). I thought $20 was a bit steep for a polariod picture of myself with some colorful splotches until the ensuing 15 min explanation of my aura started. The lady began by telling me I was having stomach issues indicated by the darker shading at the lower portion of the photo:

True enough, I had been up the previous night dealing with food poisoning and still wasn't feeling 100%. She also knew that I have a bad sleep schedule, that I was a Pisces, that I overanalyze all human interactions, that I'm currently more career focused than relationship focused, that I was having bad luck at finding a good job, and, most prophetically of all, that my job luck was going to take a turn for the better after leaving the store. Two hours after leaving I got a call for an interview that ended up turning into my current job. Maybe aura readings aren't foolproof. Maybe most of the lady's power to read the energy I was radiating came primarily from her innate intuitions...or maybe, just maybe, they came from studying the subtleties and insights of this music video:

Done Masking the Real Issues

Today I worked with an amazing makeup artist that was lucky, and more importantly talented enough, to work under Pat McGrath in Paris, for Givenchy’s spring runway show, that showcased the bejeweled tribal facemasks. There are moments in fashion when the amount of creativity displayed is literally mind blowing, and for me hearing about the 4-hour process just further solidified how truly talented and creative some in the industry really are. The precise and meticulous placement of the jewels, paired with the overall creative vision, was truly inspired.

Our on set discussion progressed further, landing on the topic of the shifting industry standards and norms. Everyone that works in fashion has his or her own experiences good or bad that have influence their ultimate opinion. Fashion has been hard to break into, and being respected isn’t something that comes easily or quickly. It’s an industry with little stability for models or makeup & hair artists, that creates and environment where people hide their tips and tricks, to maintain their coveted positions. What we all agreed on though, is the idea of a “shift in sharing”. People are sharing and collaborating more than ever these days. With YouTube tutorials readily assessable, DIY Instagram’s the norm, and magazine articles with step-by-step instructions, the environment around keeping secrets is changing. Competition is fierce in the fashion world, the way to win seems to lie in creating a persona that separates you from the thousands of other talented people fighting for your job, but being a newbie is easier than ever in the era of social media. Plus, word on the street is, Pat back stage at Givenchy, said she was impressed by the new batch of talent that assisted her, giving us hope that being talented and standing out, really does work in 2014. #backstageinspo
